Moving Box Packing, Best Practices

Posted October 27, 2012

So the big day is almost here, moving day. Except unfortunately, you have next to nothing packed up because you’re a bit too overwhelmed with everything you need to do in order to be prepared to move. Don’t worry, we’re moving and packing experts, and we’ve learned a thing or two over the years. Below are some helpful tips on how to pack, move, and ship all of your things safely and affordably, in a manner that’s not quite as overwhelming as you may think.

First and foremost, pack one room at a time. While this may seem obvious to some degree, it has been proven time and time again that by breaking large tasks that seem overwhelming down into smaller, more manageable tasks, people find that they accomplish more than they thought they were previously capable of.

When loading up and packing each shipping box, make sure that you are specific in labeling the box as to what its destination is and what it contains. While it may be tempting to slack in this area in order to make the packing process go quicker, it is essential to be thorough in order to inhibit any confusion that may occur later on when you are unpacking.

Make sure that the weight of each moving box remains fairly sensible. Whether you are shipping your boxes across several states, or moving them yourself, it is going to make it easier for everyone involved if the weight of the box is manageable. If at all possible, make sure that heavier objects go into smaller shipping boxes so that they are easier to carry.

Make sure that items which are fragile are specifically marked as such on the outside of the box, and are carefully wrapped in the best shipping supplies you can find. Instead of folding box flaps over one another, invest in a strong carton sealing tape to ensure contents stay inside the box. You may even want to consider putting very fragile items in double shipping boxes, especially if you are not the one moving these items and have hired a company to do so.
