Shipping Packages During the Holidays

Posted December 14, 2012

One of the biggest retail holidays of the year is drawing near, and with it come the anxiety and overwhelming feelings of panic associated with the thought of needing to accomplish a lot of things in a short amount of time. Thankfully we live in a time when shipping a gift to a friend that isn’t able to make the trek home for the holidays is simple, however, there are a few things to keep in mind before heading out the door to ship loved ones their gifts.

First, you will want to make sure that the gifts you choose are able to ship easily. While it can be accomplished, shipping a rocking chair for a close friend with a newborn on the way may not exactly be the easiest task to undergo. Think about the person who has to receive the package as well, will they be willing to drive to a parcel pickup area to receive their gift, or would they rather receive something smaller on their doorstop?

Next, make sure that you have the proper packing materials for the gift you are shipping. Shipping companies are not likely to take responsibility for gifts that arrive damaged due to improper packing. Flatback tape is one of the most commonly used types of shipping tapes, this is due to its ability to withstand lots of commotion, as well as the fact that it meets USPS and UPS shipping requirements. Having plenty of this tape on hand will ensure that your package is delivered in one piece.

If you are packing more fragile items such as porcelain, it is important that you choose a box that is the correct size to ship it in. Gift boxes with one piece construction filled with inflatable packaging or paper packaging are going to be the best route to take in order to ensure the safety of these types of more fragile gifts. Suspension packaging is also a good option to keep fragile items in place, like Korrvu packaging. If you are shipping a gift that is primarily liquid, such as bath soaps or moisturizers, you may want to use bundling stretch film on the gift to make certain that the liquid will not leak through the packaging.

Assorted gift boxes are a great way to make sure you’ll have the right size box, no matter what you decide to ship. Whether it be a trinket, or garment, with an assortment of sizes, you won’t have to make a last minute trip to the store.

One of the most important steps to take when shipping a gift is to make sure it gets out on time. A package can take up to five days to reach its destination if it is being shipped via U.S. mail, and about two to three days if shipped via priority mail, these times may take even longer since this is such a busy time of year for these services. Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time so that your package doesn’t arrive after the holidays have already past. If you are worried that your package may arrive early, just make sure that you put on the label “Do Not Open Until The Holiday.” While it may drive your friends and family crazy trying to figure out what is in the package, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that your package arrived early and safely.
